About DIN 965
What it is
A machine screw with a countersunk head and a cross recess, type H (Phillips, PH) or type Z (Pozidriv, PZ): the cone-shaped head sinks into a countersink and ends flush. An M5 has a 9.2 mm head (9.3 mm in ISO 7046-1) and takes a size 2 bit.
Where it is used
On covers, hinges, fittings, housings and sheet-metal parts, where the head must end flush and the load is light, from M1.6 to M10.
DIN or ISO
ISO 7046-1 replaced DIN 965. Several heads changed: from M3.5 the ISO head is wider and higher (M4: 8.4 mm across and 2.7 mm high, against 7.5 and 2.2), the M2 takes a smaller bit and the recesses have other dimensions. ISO 7046-1 makes them in class 4.8; its part 2 gives the same screws in 8.8 and stainless steel.
Typical mistakes
- Measuring the length under the head. A countersunk screw is measured overall, head included.
- Driving a type Z (Pozidriv) recess with a Phillips bit, or the reverse. The bit rides out and damages the recess.
- Cutting the countersink for a DIN 965 head and fitting ISO 7046-1 screws. From M3.5 the ISO head is wider and stands proud.
- Expecting much load from it. A countersunk head carries less than the thread, and ISO 7046-1 screws are class 4.8.
